Mermaid spotted at a Shipwreck in Lake Michigan? In Grand Traverse Bay, off the coast of Northport, Michigan, one of the Great Lake's real mermaids was found near the "Flora" shipwreck. This silver-haired siren seems to have been exploring the sunken ship at the same time as the diver who captured this footage on camera. Oddly enough, the mermaid did not seem to be too afraid of the diver. Additional research has shown that this mermaid, named "Mermaid Phantom" is mostly blind, so perhaps she was unaware of the diver's presence? Whatever the case, this rare underwater footage boasts beautiful video clips of the mermaid, the shipwreck and Lake Michigan!
One question remains unanswered about this mysterious encounter... why was this mermaid so close to shore? What was so interesting to her about this age-old shipwreck? Perhaps she was looking for something hidden deep within the shipwreck? Maybe she is the guardian of this sunken ship?

STORYTIME!! ♥
Did you notice how shaky this video was? Well, it was our LAST swim of the year... it was filmed towards the middle of September, which isn't the warmest time of the year in Northern Michigan! However, we have gone swimming up until the middle of October before, so dad and I did NOT expect the water to be as cold as it was this day. It was FREEZING COLD!!!!
Normally, dad and I both have a breath hold of about 30+ seconds in Lake Michigan's summer water temperatures.... but neither of us cold hold our breath for more than 10 seconds this day! The water temperatures were dangerously cold, so we were about to back out of filming this video and calling it quits on mermaiding for the year. But... we had been searching for this shipwreck ALL SUMMER! We had finally found it and knew that we would regret not attempting to get at least some footage of it. And so, we quickly jumped off of our boat and into the lake's cold water. It was a stupid thing to do, thinking back, but both of us are stubborn and were dying to use my Sony FDR-X3000 to capture the beauty of this sunken ship. Sooooooo.... we shivered our way down to the ship's boiler and swam into the seaweed surrounded it... and we captured some darn-neat video footage! Honestly, I think the chilly temperature of the water made the footage turn out even more clear than usual... although Lake Michigan is always super-clean and clear! ♥
Gaaahhhh.... I can't wait to explore more shipwrecks next year! Have you ever explored a shipwreck? Which one was it!?!? ♥
