ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Back in September of 2018, my dad and I decided to head out towards Frankfort, Michigan, to film an underwater mermaid video at one of the many nearby shipwreck locations. The first location we scouted out led us to one! However... it was sticking out of the water, only 8 feet off shore, sitting in about 3 feet of water, and had nails and pointy bits sticking out everywhere! Needless to say, we couldn't film an underwater video around that shipwreck... it was dangerous and hardly under the water at all!
Then, we got in the car and searched for ANOTHER shipwreck location. We couldn't get to it, however, because the beach that supposedly led to it was a private beach... YIKES!
Then, we spoke with some individuals (on the way to another potential location) who told us to go to a certain look-out point that would have a trail leading directly to yet ANOTHER shipwreck. So... we took the 20 minute trail down to the beach. We both travelled down a steep hill through the woods hauling my 27 lbs silicone mermaid tail, my dad's scuba supplies, and all of the filming gear and setup gear on a wagon. Both my dad and I had broken toes at this time, which was quite painful. Upon reaching the beach, we discovered that the water visibility was TERRIBLE, the waves were rough and the lake's temperature was almost too cold to swim in. And so... we hauled all of our gear UPHILL to go back to the car and brainstorm an alternative option. At this point, it was nearing 6:00 PM. The sun was getting ready to set, we were frustrated, worn down from walking so much, and were hungry from having not eaten since breakfast. Yay! But we continued on.
We drove, and drove, and drove from lake, to pond-like-lake to other watery-looking-areas. Everything seemed to be wavy and clouded with sand/scum. Eventually, we settled for Frankfort's public beach area, since it was more calm than most areas we had seen. We jumped in the frigid water, swam for a good 15 minutes, and then shivered all of the way down to a restaurant located within a hotel's lobby... where we drank hot water by the teakettle-full. ♥ Both dad and I were shivering, but relieved to have at least gotten SOME footage after a long day of failures.
When we got home, we were disappointed to see that silly old me got coconut oil ALL OVER THE CAMERA'S LENS!!! Most of the footage turned out blurry and smeared due to the oil coating, and the footage that DID turn out was hard to see due to poor visibility.
But hey... despite all things working against us, we managed to capture footage and ended up with this video. Is it the best? No! But it is unique and holds great memories of one of the most frustrating mermaiding experiences to date. Bwahahaha!
